Insulation, roofing and fiberglass composite manufacturer Owens Corning operates manufacturing plants worldwide and employs 19,000 people in 37 countries.

While the Toledo, Ohio-based company relied on local security providers and integrators, leadership of the multibillion-dollar company realized a growing need for a national provider that could deliver the scale to handle multiple projects concurrently with the latest technology and consistent performance.

While still involving local security companies at some locations, Owens Corning turned to ADT in 2016 to address their national needs, which simply couldn’t be addressed by a network of subcontractors.

Today, ADT Commercial helps Owens Corning protect more than 20 manufacturing locations throughout the United States and continues to grow the relationship by providing direction and working as an extension of the end user’s global security team, notes Lisa Ciappetta, vice president of National Account Sales Strategy, ADT.

“They rely on our experience to help guide them to ensure that the individual installations comply with their policies and procedures,” Ciappetta says. “The challenges lie in ensuring that the projects meet Owens Corning’s global policies and procedures across their entire footprint, and working with local management to ensure compliance.”

While Owens Corning’s security needs vary from location to location, the most common solutions ADT integrates to protect the facilities include (the end user requested not to disclose vendor names): enterprise access control, printers and photo ID badges; IP-based intercoms at front or rear entrances or at access gates in the parking lot, with authorized employees able to provide remote door/gate release; IP-based intrusion panels, some integrated remote PIN management, plus in some locations ability to lockdown doors in tandem with the access control; and IP-based video surveillance connected to the company’s internal network.

After a project is identified by Owens Corning global security team, ADT Commercial conducts a site survey, develops a design plan and scope of work, presents a proposal and executes an agreement. Later, a project plan and schedule are submitted for review, and the schedule is adjusted as required to minimize impact to Owens Corning daily operations, Ciappetta explains.

Upon completion of the installation, testing and verification of the systems performing as designed, the ADT Commercial project manager conducts a system orientation and training with Owens Corning site management, she notes.

“ADT Commercial works closely with Owens Corning’s global security staff, facilities and IT managers,” Ciappetta says. “With the security staff, we have day-to-day contact. As it relates to IT, we hold twice weekly calls both prior to commencement of the project and during to ensure that the network infrastructure is sufficient for the application.”
